Shopify (SHOP) is set to join the Nasdaq before the market opens on Monday, May 19, replacing MongoDB (MDB) in one of the most widely tracked tech benchmarks on Wall Street.
The Canadian e-commerce giant will also be added to several other Nasdaq indexes, including the Nasdaq-100 Equal Weighted Index and the Nasdaq-100 Tech Sector Index, while MongoDB will be removed from all associated benchmarks.
The move comes as Shopify continues to reassert itself as a dominant player in the digital commerce ecosystem, following a year of aggressive restructuring, cost-cutting, and a sharper focus on core business lines.
Following the announcement, analysts were quick to point to Shopify’s improving financial profile and strategic positioning.
In a recent research note, JMP Securities reiterated its “Outperform” rating on Shopify, stating: “We believe Shopify’s improving operating leverage and robust GMV growth are underappreciated by the market.”
Baird also weighed in positively, highlighting the company’s long-term tech potential.
“We continue to believe Shopify is building one of the most important commerce infrastructure platforms and is well positioned to benefit from adoption of AI-driven tools among merchants,” he said.
RBC Capital Markets, which maintains an “Outperform” rating, pointed to the company’s focus on profitability: “Shopify has made notable progress in expanding gross margins and streamlining its operations post-Logistics divestiture.”
Meanwhile, Citi analysts noted that the firm’s recent innovations — particularly its investment in AI tools for merchants and improvements in checkout performance — could help the company claim a bigger market share.
“We view Shopify as a key long-term beneficiary of the structural shift to digital commerce, especially as SMB and enterprise demand converges on unified platforms.”
Shares of Shopify are up more than 40% year-to-date, buoyed by strong Q1 earnings and better-than-expected guidance.
The addition to the Nasdaq-100, which tracks the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, is expected to boost investor visibility and broaden institutional ownership of Shopify stock as many passive and index-linked funds will adjust their portfolios accordingly.
